Automotive Industry PCBA

Automotive Industry PCBA

The automotive industry is developing towards electronics, informatization, and intelligence. The proportion of automotive electronics in the entire vehicle continues to rise. Taking the automotive ADAS system as an example, it requires a lot of PCBA components, such as sensors, controllers, and safety systems. This directly promotes the growth of automotive PCBA demand.

Automotive Industry PCBA is the core component of the automotive electronic system, responsible for connecting and controlling various electronic devices. A high-quality PCBA is critical to a car's performance and reliability.

The types of automotive PCBA motherboards are: Flexible PCB board (FPC), Rigid PCB board (RPCB), Rigid-flex board, HDI board, Ceramic PCB and Metal Core PCB.

Different assembly processes

PCBA processing is to form a finished electronic product after a complete set of processing processes such as PCB boarding, SMT patch processing, DIP plug-in processing, quality inspection, testing, and assembly. This processing process is called PCBA processing, and PCBA can also be said to be this Processed circuit boards. There are many kinds of PCBA, such as: THT assembly, SMT assembly and Mixed assembly technology.

Through-Hole(THT) Technology

THT (Through-Hole Technology) is to pass the leads of electronic components through the prefabricated holes of the printed circuit board and fix them on the board by welding. This technique is suitable for larger size components and is typically used in high power and high voltage applications. The assembly steps of THT mainly include:

•1: Component Placement - This step is done manually by professional engineering staff.

•2: Inspection and Correction - After the component placement is completed, the board is placed in the matching shipping frame, and the circuit board with the inserted component will be automatically checked to determine whether the component is placed correctly.

• 3: Wave Soldering - The THT components should now be soldered precisely to the board.

Surface Mount (SMT)Technology

SMT (Surface Mount Technology) is a technology that directly mounts electronic components on the surface of a printed circuit board (PCB). Electrical connection and mechanical fixation are achieved by mounting components on a printed circuit board. The small size of SMT components saves a lot of space and is suitable for high-density and miniaturized electronic products.

• 1 : Solder Paste Printing - Solder paste is applied to the board by a solder paste printer.

• 2: Component Mounting - After coming out of the solder paste printing machine, the PCB will be automatically sent to the placement machine, and under the action of solder paste tension, the components or ICs will be mounted on the corresponding pads.

• 3: Reflow Soldering - After placing each component, the board goes through a 23-foot furnace.

SMT is a surface mount technology, and THT is a traditional through-hole insertion technology. The main difference is the difference between sticking and plugging. Regarding components and solder joints, the former is located on the same side of the circuit board, and the latter is located on both sides of the circuit board. See the bellow Comparison between THT Assembly and SMT Assembly.

Mixed Assembly Technology

Mixed assembly technology refers to using both SMT and THT assembly methods on the same PCB. This method makes full use of the advantages of SMT and THT, and is suitable for high-performance, high-complexity electronic products. Mixed assembly requires coordination of SMT and THT production processes to ensure assembly quality and efficiency. Mixed assembly technology has the following classifications:

(1)   Single sided Mixed Assembly.

Single-sided mixed assembly means that SMT patch components SMC/SMD and plug-in components THT are distributed on different sides of the PCB and mixed, but the welding surface is only one side.

(2)Double-sided mixed assembly.

Double-sided mixed assembly means that SMT patches and DIP plug-ins can be mixed and distributed on the same side of the PCB, and at the same time, SMC/SMD can also be distributed on both sides of the PCB. Double-sided mixed assembly uses double-sided PCB, wave soldering and reflow soldering. There are two options: Adhesives PCBA and Non-Adhesives PCBA. Please send the bellow process.

a. Double-sided mixed assembly with Adhesives

b. Double-sided mixed assembly with Non-Adhesives

Types of Automotive Industry PCBA motherboards

There are 6 types of PCBs widely used in the automotive industry:

Ceramic PCB: The core of the ceramic substrate is made of aluminum nitride or aluminum oxide. It has the characteristics of good thermal conductivity and high temperature resistance.

HDI PCB: Compared with traditional circuit boards, HDI PCB has higher wiring density. It contains blind/buried microvias, and the minimum space for automotive HDI PCB is about 75μm/75μm or less.

High-frequency PCB: High-frequency PCBs are usually used in automotive anti-collision or predictive emergency braking systems, which rely on PCBs to transmit microwave high-frequency signals. PTFE or hybrid ceramics are ideal for high-frequency PCB materials, they have low dielectric loss and can be used as high-frequency wave transmitters and receivers.

Flexible PCB: This type of PCB has the advantage of being foldable. It is estimated that there are more than 100 kinds of flexible PCBs used in a car. In addition, it has become a trend to use flex PCBs instead of circuit groups.

Rigid-flex PCB: Rigid-flex PCB is popular in the automotive industry and is widely used in automotive LED lighting systems. They combine the advantages of rigid PCB and flexible PCB, reducing solder joints and connectors.

Metal Core PCB (Aluminum PCB): The substrate of a metal PCB is usually made of aluminum or copper. Compared with traditional PCB such as FR4 PCB, it has better thermal conductivity.

Features of PCBA in the automotive industry

·Suitable for complex systems in the automotive industry

In a car, there are many complex systems. These complex systems face numerous challenges such as extreme temperatures and external disturbances. Automotive PCBAs have special features to withstand such extreme conditions.

·Can withstand fluctuating extreme temperature conditions

In automotive systems, materials that can withstand such fluctuations are used. Automotive PCBAs use materials that can withstand fluctuating temperature conditions.

·Resistant to automotive industry chemicals

Corrosive acids, organic solvents, adhesives, and bases such as salt water can pose significant challenges to automotive PCBs. PCBAs use materials that resist corrosion on automotive PCBs. It enables PCBs to last longer and more efficiently with minimal disruption.

·High reliability

Materials in automotive PCBs are very strong and last longer. This means that these materials are able to withstand harsh conditions and function very well. These characteristics of an automotive PCBA make it one of the most reliable components in a car.

·Adapt to all automotive environments

Automotive PCBAs can adapt to different environments.

·Dirty resistance

Accumulated dirt in the PCB system can cause electrical shorts in the system. Automotive PCBAs use special laminates to keep dirt off the circuits. It will allow you to use the car in a dusty environment.
